“Keep the knowledge, lose the pain.”
Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) is an evidence based therapy that uses back and forth eye movements/ bilateral stimulation to help clients address depression, anxiety, phobias, grief, post traumatic stress disorder/traumas, life problems, substance use, etc. It is not the same as EMDR, however both use eye movements & bilateral stimulation. In experiencing ART you may find that you connect pieces of information that are already stored in your memory to help you resolve problems.
It is believed the way the eye moves during ART is similar to the dreaming stage of sleep which is the stage for memory reconsolidation, the process that restructures memories and emotional learning to create healthier memories and behavioral changes.
However, as trauma is an experience that disrupts our sense of safety and ability to cope, certain things are hard to consolidate on our own. There isn’t a pre-existing file to store it in, so the memories stay stuck in implicit memory.
ART is a very focused therapy and can produce long lasting results in a short period of time compared to talk therapy. A lot can occur in a single session, and in general a specific issue may take 1-5 sessions to resolve. Healing areas of attachment wounding or chronic challenges/trauma takes longer, and we may choose to incorporate Internal Family Systems and science based trauma informed yoga/breathwork techniques to learn to live in safe connection with our bodies.
You are in charge of this work, what we target and when, and how much you share. You do not need to talk about your trauma at all for it to be effective!
As we do ART I will be asking you to notice body sensations. The tracking of body sensations will let me know the ART is working for you. Physical sensations will also be processed using eye movements/bilateral stimulation so that disturbing sensations can disappear and comfortable sensations can be enhanced. Using ART interventions, clients are able to replace negative images with positive ones. Then, when clients think about their problem, it is the positive images they will recall.
If you are now thinking- ‘well I don’t want to lie to myself’ remember, you keep the facts but lose the pain. You will always know what the truth was. Our work is in finding how you can carry that truth with you and live your life now, holding on to safety.
Yes! Therapy can be in person or virtual. If you are virtual you must be located in NY at the time of our session. I use a HIPAA adherent telehealth program for our meetings.
Intensives can be designed to help you meet your goals rapidly. Meeting twice a week short term or 3-4 hour sessions can be arranged.
